The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand accompanied
by Minister for Tourism, Mr. G.A. Mir inaugurated Eight days long Navrata
Festival-2013 at Katra, the base camp of the holy cave shrine of Shri Mata
Vaishno Devi Ji , by lighting the sacred Jyoti on Saturday.
The Navratra festival is being organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), Tourism Department and District Administration, Reasi in collaboration with local organizations. As a part of the inaugural ceremony, an attractive Shobha Yatra depicting the rich cultural heritage of the state amidst spiritual ambience was taken out from the Asia Crossing which culminated at bus stand. The procession comprised of a large number of pilgrims from across the country and abroad, school children, cultural troupes and tableau. The helicopters showered flower petals on the procession adding colours to the occasion. Extending greetings to the people in general and pilgrims in particular on holy Navratras, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the Navratra festival provides an opportunity to the visiting yatris from various corners of the country and abroad to have a glimpse of our rich cultural heritage and peaceful co-existence of people of different faiths. Mr. Tara Chand lauded the efforts of state tourism department for diverting Shri Vaishno Devi Ji Pilgrims to different tourist destinations for the promotion of tourism industry. He said work on artificial lake at Jammu, cable car project at Bahu fort, beautification of Mubarkh Mandi Complex and expansion of the Jammu Airport is under process for attracting more tourists in Jammu division. Dy. CM said that Rail service to the holy town Katra would be started soon adding that with the train coming to Katra the Yatris will have the added facilities for performing the pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi. Mr. Tara Chand said that government is committed to extend all facilities to the people of Katra in general and visiting pilgrims in particular. He also highlighted various on going developmental projects for the Katra and instructed the concerned agencies to complete these projects in a time bound mann. He also assured that problems like water supply, solid waste
management and other similar issues of Katra town related to the smooth
flow of Yatra would also be given due consideration for their early
Minister for Tourism, Mr. G.A. Mir while speaking on the occasion extended
his greetings to people of Katra in general and visiting pilgrims in
particular on the auspicious occasion on holy Navratras. He said it was all
due to the blessings of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji that over 1.25 crore
pilgrims visited at the holy cave shrine which supplement the tourism
industry in a big way.
Terming the Navrtra Festival Katra a symbol of secularism the Minister for
Tourism said that the event provides and opportunity to the people of
different faiths to participate in the festival. He said public cooperation
is imperative for making such event a great success. Mr. Mir announced Rs
10 Lacs enhancement in the budget of the Navratra festival.
MLA Reasi, Mr. Baldev Raj Sharma and MLC Mr. Jugal Kishore Sharma also
spoke n the occasion and assured all out help for smooth conduct of the
Navratra Festival Katra and also put forth various demands for the
development of Katra and its adjoining areas like separate higher secondary
school for girls, creation of new administrative units in Reasi district.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Mr. Shantmanu who is also the Chairman of
the Navratra Festival Celebration Committee highlighted the various events
going to be held during the Navratra days and said efforts be made to
design this festival on modern line in near future to attract large number
of pilgrims. He also appreciated the efforts of all coordinating agencies
for extending their cooperation in making the event successful.

As part of the festival, shobha yatra cum cultural procession will be
taken out from Asia Chowk at 7.30 p.m., All India Devotional Song
Competition will be held at Shri Yog Ashram Air Strip, Katra at 8 p.m and
cultural programme will be arranged by the Song and Drama Division at GHSS,
Katra at 8.30 p.m. daily.
Similarly religious discourses on the Ramayana and Bhagwat Gita will be held at Raghunath Mandir from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m, Hasya Vyang Competition at Durga Bhawan Katra on October 09 to October 11 at 8.30 p.m daily and wrestling competition will be held at Multipurpose Sports Stadium, Katra on October 11 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Talent Show for blind children would also be held n October 12 in the premises of GHSS, Katra at 11 a.m.
Exhibition of Departmental stalls would be held at GHSS, Katra. Cultural programme and awareness rallies would also be taken out by the school childrens during the festival. Joint Director Information, Jammu, Samita Sethi, SP, Reasi, Mr. Sharief Chouhan, SP Katra, Mr. Pawan Parihar, senior officers of different departments, members of Navratra Celebration Committee, prominent citizens and large number of devotees were present on the occasion.
The proceeding of Competition was conducted by Mr. Rakesh Wazir who is also the Chairman of the said Competition besides Member Navratra Festival Committee. The grand finale of the All India Devotional Song Competition will be held on 12th of Oct. and winner will be awarded with Rs. One Lakh Gold Coin of Goddess and a recording contract with Venus Records & Tapes ltd.
Moreover, Contestants who stood Ist. in the preliminary round will directly join the Grand Finale on 12th Oct. and 2nd. and 3rd position holders will again contest among themselves in semi-final on 11th Oct. to qualify for Grand Finale. The All India Devotional Song Competition is being organized by S.M.V.D. Shrine Board, Department of J&K Tourism, District Administration Reasi in collaboration with the different agencies. General Manager, Industry, Reasi, Mr. Krishan Lal was the chief guest on the occasion. The poets who recited their verses in the Kavi-Sammelan which mainly include Mr. Surinder Singh Manhas, Randheer Singh Raipuria, Mohan Lal, Jagjit Sufi, Balram Saini, M.K. Pagal, Vijay Sharma, Amita Mehta, Sunita Sharma, Sanjeev Padha, Kamal Singh Kamal, Bishan Dass Gharia, Raj Kumar etc.
The poetic presentations by the poets on different issues were so forceful that compelled the audience to give repeated and big applause. Presenting vote of thanks, the President of the club extended his sincere thanks to Add. Earlier, the function was inaugurated by the chief guest by lilting a traditional lamp at the venue of the sammelan in presence of the Members Navratra celebration committee and other functionaries of the organizing club. Among others, Mr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Sh. Sardari Lal Dubey, Mr. Virender Kesar, Mr. Naresh Kumar and large number of people were also present in the Kavi Sammelan.
District Industry Manager, Mr. Krishan Lal, Assistant Director tourism Vinakshi koul; and Zonal Education Officer, Pouni, Mr. Harish Dubey jointly flagged off the rally from Government Higher Secondary School, Katra. The students carrying placards and raising slogans regarding environmental protection after passing through various locations of the Katra town like bus stand, main bazaar, Chintamani Mandir finally culminated at Government Higher Secondary School, Katra. Earlier, Fancy Dress Competition was also organized in the premises of the sdahool in which students of different educational institutions attired in colorful dresses presented different rupas of Goddess Durga .
Later, a painting competition on the topic environmentalprotection was also organized in Government Higher Secondary School, Katra. Among others, Assistant Director Tourism Ms. Veenakshi Kaul, District Information Officer Parvinder Kour Principal, Government Higher Secondary School, Katra, Members of the festival committee and prominent, Teachers and large number of students were present on the occasion.
Scintillating cultural performances presented by the artists of Song and Drama Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (GOI) are attracting large local crowd including thousands of pilgrims from within and outside the State during the ongoing Navratra festival- 2013 at Government Higher Secondary School, Katra. The artists of the department attired in their traditional costumes spell bound the thickly crowded audience with their heart throbbing performances, last evening.
The presentations of folk dances of different regions of the country which received huge applause from across the audience included Harran, Maharaja folk dance of Manipuri, Dogri folk dance “ Geetru” Himachali, Punjabi folk dances and songs. The performance compelled every body present on the occasion to give them repeated cheers.
Earlier, As a part of on-going Navratra Festival being organized by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) and Department of Tourism in collaboration with District Administration and local organizations at Katra, a cultural procession depicting rich culture of the state and other parts of the country was taken out from Asia Crossing, where the District Development Commissioner Reasi, Dr. Shahid Iqbal Choudary who was the chief guest on the 3rd Navratra, lit the sacred Joyti before the start of impressive procession.
The impressive Shoba Yatra- cum- cultural procession was taken out from the Asia Crossing which after passing through the main bazaars and other locations of the Katra town culminated at GHSS, Katra.

**Panchayats**,*and various scenes from *Ramayana* and *Mahabharata* mesmerized the large number of devotees and huge crowd present on the occasion.

An other event of Navratra Festival, “ Hassaya Vyang contest” started in the premises of Durga Bhawan Katra last evening. The participant hailing from with and out side the state made the audience brust in to laughter with their hilarious performances touching various aspects of the social evils and human life. As many as 16 contest took part in the preliminary round out of which 12 select for second round.
As a part of Navratra festival, the contest is being organized by Hassaya Vyang Organization Katra in collaboration with Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, Katra, J&K State Tourism Department and District Administration Reasi.
KATRA, OCTOBER-08:- With greater participation of singers from within and out side the state, the All India Devotional Song Competition being organized as a part of on going Navratra Festival at Katra by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, J&K Tourism Department and District Administration in collaboration with different agencies is gaining momentum with every passing day of holy navratras in the premises of Yog Ashram, Katra last evening.
On the third day of Navratra, Mr. Nikhal Majotra from Miran Sahab Jammu clinches 1st Position, Mr. Rajesh Gaind from Jammu stood 2nd and 3rd prize was taken by Ms. Gunjan Dixit from Mathura Utter Pardesh. Deputy Commissioner, Reasi, Dr Iqbal Choudary who was chief guest on the occasion distributed cash award prize of Rs. 5000/-, Rs.3000/- and Rs. 2000/- along with gifts from Zee News among Ist 2nd and third winners respectively.
Similarly, the winners of the second day of the contest were also given same cash prizes along with gift hampers to Mr. Subhjinderjeet from Amritsar , Mr. Chaman Lehri from Reasi and Mr. Amit Sharma from Pathankot (Jointly) and Ms. Anuradha Sharma from Jammu Lauded the efforts organizers of the bhaint contest especially, the chairman of All India Devotional Song Competition, Mr. Rakesh Wazir in putting their best efforts for the successful conduct of the mega event. “ Music has got no religion, cost or creed. In All India Devotional Song Competition being organized in the premises of Yog Ashram, Katra, Mrs. Banasree Sarkar from West Bengal, Mr. Rakesh Deol from Jammu and Ms. Mavish Sharma from Jammu adjudged Ist , 2nd and 3rd position respectively. In all 16 participants hailing from with in and outside the state participated in the mega event.
Director Tourism, Mr. Soujanya Sharma gave cash prizes and gift hamper Rs. 5000/-, Rs. 3000/- and Rs. 2000/- to 1st , 2nd and 3rd winners. Dr. Surinder Sharma from Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Usha Bhagati and Mrs. Parveen Sabherwal both from Jammu were educater of the programme.

Earlier, a shobha yatra comprising various Jankies was taken out from Asia Crossing where Director Tourism, Mr. Soujanya Sharma lit the sacred Joyti which mesmerized the pilgrims visiting holy town. Thousands of pilgrims were seen standing on both sides of the passage of procession showering flowers and raising slogans in praise of Goddess Durga.
Likewise, Cultural Programme in Hassya Vayang contest, 12 contestant participated in the semi final and out of which 8 contestant qualified for final round. The participants who will give their hilarious performances in the final include Rohit, Shazi Khan, Sonu, Amit Raja, Atul, Khabri Lal, Abhishek and Sudesh respectively. Other event which were organized during the 4th Navratra at the base camp of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine include cultural Programme by Song and Drama Division in the premises of GHSS, Katra and Bhagawat Katha at Raghunath Mandir, Katra. Among others, Assistant Commissioner Revenu, Reasi, Mr. Tilak Raj Shastri, SP Reasi Sharief Chouhan, Additional SP Katra, Mr. Pawan Parihar, Project Officer (DRDA), Dr. Jagdish, District Information Officer Parvinder Kour Mehra, President Hotel & Restaurant Association Katra, Sham Lal Kesar, President, Hassya Vanyag, Mr. Gopal Padha, prominent of the town, Sardari Lal Dubey , Shiv Kumar Sharma, Swami Joganand, Harish Dubey, Advocate Surinder Sharma, Virender Kesar were also present on the occasion.

As part of Navratra Festival scintillating cultural programme was also organized by the students in the premises of Gvt. Higher Secondary School, Katra in which students of different educational institutions presented group dances and songs which got loud applause from the audience.
